Medical travel for major dental work, plastic surgery and other medical care continues to be in the news in the United States. On Friday evening, Jeff Schult, author of Beauty from Afar, (me, in other words) was interviewed about the subject on the Your Time with Kim syndicated talk radio program. Here’s the segment:
Your Time with Kim Iverson/Jeff Schult Interview
The show, hosted by Kim Iverson, was broadcast in Austin, Texas; Buffalo, New York; Denver, Colorado; Indianapolis, Indiana; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Memphis, Tennessee; Norfolk, Virginia; Portland, Oregon; and Wichita, Kansas. If you’re joining our blog for the first time from any of those cities, welcome! And feel free to browse around or contact us with any questions.
Prisma Dental and Costa Rica are mentioned, of course.
Prisma has been a recommended dental provider for Companion Global Healthcare Inc., based in South Carolina, for a number of years now. Prospective patients might be interested to take a look at one of the company’s brochures (click on the image for full size.)
In other news:
– We have been asked several times to post again a link to the Delta Sky magazine article that features Prisma. Here is the direct link to the Nov. 2009 issue of Delta Sky:

– Prisma Dental now has more than 650 friends on Facebook! Come join us, if you have not already. Today, we have pictures of the grand opening of Tiffany’s in Costa Rica. Of course, Prisma’s international patient coordinator Tiffany Koffroth had to be there, along with Dr. Telma:

Prisma Dental is proud and honored to be among the first medical facilities in Costa Rica to be accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities International (AAAASFI).
“The certificate of accreditation is a symbol to patients that the accredited facility has taken the additional step of opening its practice to the scrutiny of an international organization dedicated to patient safety. This could be a deciding factor for those patients seeking the highest quality results in the safest environments.” — Dr. Ronald Iverson, President of AAAASFI
The AAAASFI review process is comprehensive and thorough,” said Dr. Josef Cordero Pinczanski, D.D.S. “We’re pleased to have it recognized that we are in compliance with the highest professional standards for our facilities and methods. Our patients deserve the best and this is one way of letting them know that they are getting the best.”
According to the AAAASF, the vast majority of ambulatory surgery facilities even in the United States are still unaccredited, operating independent of any peer review and inspection process. A growing number of states and specialty societies, however, are recognizing the need for mandatory accreditation. AAAASF has been and continues to be in the forefront of these legislative efforts.

Having dental work done can be stressful, though at Prisma we do everything possible to make patients as comfortable as possible.
That is why we are pleased to recommend our friends and neighbors at KINE Physiotherapy and Pilates Centre in San Jose.
Massage therapy can help patients feel more relaxed, less stressed and ready to face their dental treatments.
- Calmer patients are a lot less fearful overall and are also more trusting of the treatment being rendered
- Regular massages also allow the normal use of anesthesia to be much more effective. If a patient is extremely stressed and not trusting the treatment, often he will be just waiting for pain to develop. That means he will unconsciously minimize the effect of the local anesthetic
Kine is just two blocks away from Prisma Dental. Visit them at www.kinecr.com to see their complete list of massages, and ask us about them when you are in the office!
We hope all our friends are having a great summer and want to remind folks that now is a terrific time to be planning your late-summer or autumn trip to Costa Rica. Even in August, round-trip airfares from New York to San Jose, Costa Rica can be had for about $400. Many people find the best time to go to Costa Rica, though, is autumn — after summer vacation but before the high season begins in December. (Check our airlines post for links)
In other news, we have a note to Dr. Rubinstein from Gabrielle in California, a recent patient:
Hello Dr. Rubinstein.
I just wanted to take the time to thank you for a job well done I love my new teeth and everything is a perfect fit (bite). When I come back to visit If my friends in CR and have some dental needs, I will call for an appointment.
Gabrielle
